Philosopher powers home on debut at Caulfield

After a pair of sparkling jump outs, where he defeated the older horses in great style, Philosopher made his debut today at Caulfield and showed his contemporaries a similarly clean pair of heels.

Quickly into the lead under Damien Oliver, Philosopher galloped along at a strong pace with his ears pricked, and, after forcing his rivals off the bridle on the home turn, powered up the straight to score in fast time.

Philosopher was secured for $800,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2021 from the Widden Stud draft on behalf of our JHB Colt Partnership. He is the first foal of his dam, who is a half-sister to stakes winners Atmospherical, Gai’s Choice and Peron, this being the further family of Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Eagle Falls.

Thanks to trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman, and congratulations to owners Rob Love, Belinda Bateman, Fergus Doyle, Phil & Glenda Mehrten, Danny & Pauline Saab, John & Fran Ingham, Gary Diamond and Widden Stud.

Aslav powers home on debut at Hawkesbury

At a rare Hawkesbury midweek city meeting, Vancouver colt Aslav made an impressive winning debut today, showing a great attitude throughout to power through the pack and win with his ears pricked under Champion jockey Hugh Bowman.

Patiently and beautifully prepared by his trainer Chris Waller, Aslav was a $260,000 James Harron Bloodstock purchase at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale as a 2YO in October, and we now look forward to stepping him up in grade, possibly with an eye on the Brisbane Winter Carnival, where Chris has such a good record.

He was selected after a particularly impressive breeze, which was the fastest time recorded of the catalogue for those who breezed in Melbourne, and joins multiple stakes winner Odyssey Moon as a JHB-selected graduate of this sale.

Congratulations to owners Belinda Bateman, Rob Love, Fergus Doyle, Phil & Glenda Mehrten, John & Fran Ingham, Gary Diamond, Danny & Pauline Saab.

Five quality yearlings for JHB at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale

After what has been a very competitive and healthy yearling sales season, it was no surprise to see the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale post strong gains both on last year’s pandemic-affected selling but also on what was a very strong sale in 2019.

We were delighted to come away with five exceptional yearlings, with their details below.

Lot 36 - Pariah x Real Stolle colt - $375,000

Our first purchase was lot 36 from Newgate Farm, a very strong and forward colt by our young stallion Pariah, who stands at Arrowfield Stud. The Pariah stock have been very impressive all year and this was an outstanding example. He is a three-quarter brother to 2YO stakes winner Nomothaj (by Snitzel), and out of 2YO stakes winner Real Stolle, so this is very much a 2YO orientated pedigree.

Lot 53 - Fastnet Rock x Rostova filly - $1,100,000

Lot 53 - Fastnet Rock x Rostova filly - $1,100,000

Our second purchase was a very athletic filly by top-class stallion Fastnet Rock, secured for $1,100,000 from Coolmore Stud. She is out of Group 1 winner Rostova and is a full-sister to the very smart sprinter Anaheed.

Our third purchase was this exceptionally powerful and precocious looking daughter of leading stallion I Am Invincible secured for $610,000 from Cressfield Stud. She is the second foal of the very fast and classy G2 winning sprinter Wild Rain and from the family of Horse of The Year Northerly.

Lot 173 - I Am Invincible x Zamzam colt - $1,150,000

Our fourth purchase was lot 173, the very strong I Am Invincible colt out of Zamzam secured alongside Coolmore Stud for $1,150,000 from the Yarraman Park draft. He is the second foal of the very smart 2YO Zamzam (by Redoute’s Choice) who was third in the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes as a 2YO.

Lot 428 - Capitalist x Miss Interiors - $1,050,000

Lot 428 - Capitalist x Miss Interiors - $1,050,000

Our final purchase was this very impressive and strong colt by Capitalist, secured from Torryburn Stud for $1,050,000. He is by our young stallion Capitalist who is going from strength to strength as a stallion at Newgate Farm, with already ten stakes horses from his first crop. This colt also boasts an outstanding dam side to his pedigree, with his dam having already produced G1 Caulfield Guineas runner-up Aysar and this season’s G2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner Home Affairs from her first two foals. Further this is the exceptional family of dual G1 winning sprinter Russian Revolution.

Dual Group 1-winning 2YO King's Legacy retires to Coolmore Stud

KINGS LEGACY,Z_6_RW_04042020__C083.jpg

Following what was an excellent effort in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas on Saturday, the decision has been made to retire dual Group 1-winning 2YO King’s Legacy to Coolmore Stud.

Of the announcement, his yearling purchaser James Harron stated “It was a great effort by King’s Legacy on Saturday and jockey Tom Marquand reported that had he not been held up at a crucial stage in the straight he could have made things very interesting. King’s Legacy has been a tremendous horse for us and we could not be more excited looking forward to his future at Coolmore Stud. Some of Australia’s biggest breeders are involved with this colt and he will be strongly supported with outstanding mares throughout his stud career."

An outstanding physical, as befits his $1,400,000 Magic Millions yearling price tag, King’s Legacy is the only horse by multiple champion sire and established sire of sires Redoute’s Choice to win more than one Group 1 as a 2YO. He won both the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and the Group 1 Champagne Stakes in great style, beating multiple Group 1 winner Ole Kirk on both occasions, whilst he also beat the likes of Farnan, Tagaloa and North Pacific through his career.

He also boasts an impeccable pedigree, being a more accomplished racehorse than his three-quarter brother Not A Single Doubt, who currently leads the general sires’ table, while Snippets is another top-class sire from his family. King’s Legacy has also won more Group 1 races than Redoute’s Choice’s best sire sons Snitzel, Not a Single Doubt and Beneteau.

Coolmore principal Tom Magnier said, “King’s Legacy is aptly named and is everything Australia is looking for in a young stallion prospect. He won the Sires’ Produce and then, after we joined the ownership, he added the Champagne Stakes at Royal Randwick. We’re delighted he will now take his place on our roster. He’s by an outstanding sire of sires and has an exceptional pedigree and an imposing physique. He will be heavily supported by both Coolmore and some of Australia’s leading breeders who remain in the ownership."

A fee will be announced at a later date.

Kalashnikov hits the target in Group 3 Black Opal Stakes

r33_0_5000_3300_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Capitalist colt Kalashnikov has now got his act together in a big way, breaking his maiden in great style against older horses despite being stuck three wide, and he followed that up this weekend at Canberra in fantastic style in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes to book his place in the Group 1 Golden Slipper in two weeks’ time.

Well rated by James McDonald, Kalashnikov relished the strong pace and showed a great attitude along with a sparkling turn of foot once in the clear to take out this important race.

He becomes the first group winner for his sire, JHB yearling purchase Capitalist, his third stakes winner amongst no fewer than ten stakes horses, which is a phenomenal start. Kalashnikov was a $600,000 JHB yearling purchase for our colt group at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Segenhoe Stud.

He will now head to attempt to emulate his sire in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes, where he will be ridden by Mark Zahra.

Kalashnikov guns down his Gosford rivals

Kalashnikov (Capitalist x Rough Ride)

Kalashnikov (Capitalist x Rough Ride)

Capitalist colt Kalashnikov has always shown good talent at the barrier trials, and it was super to see him bring this form to race day in great style today at Gosford during their metropolitan meeting.

Kalashnikov was able to win here despite things conspiring against him, being forced to race three wide without cover, no small task for a 2YO facing older rivals.

Kalashnikov was a $600,000 JHB yearling purchase from Segenhoe Stud at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is the sixth winner for the hugely exciting young stallion, JHB’s Golden Slipper winner Capitalist. His dam, Rough Ride, is a winning daughter of Flying Spur and a half-sister to four stakes winners, notably Group 1 winner Eagle Way.

Congratulations to owners Rob Love, Belinda Bateman, Fergus Doyle, Phil & Glenda Mehrten, Danny & Pauline Saab, John & Fran Ingham, Gary Diamond and Kevin & Lesley Maloney. Thanks as always to jockey Jason Collett and trainers Peter & Paul Snowden.

A good haul for JHB at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale

The record of graduates from the Inglis Classic Yearling sale in recent seasons has not gone unnoticed, with the hugely impressive Inglis Millennium winner Profiteer (by Capitalist) joining the likes of Extreme Choice, Classique Legend and Vow and Declare as major race winners to come from this sale.

With this in mind, we approached this year’s sale with a strong focus on securing what we believed to be the best physical types on offer, and were delighted to come away with seven quality yearlings.

Colt Group Purchases

For the JHB Colt Group, we came away with four impressive colts, with their details below

Lot 182 - Capitalist x Mystical Tale colt - $600,000

Lot 182 - Capitalist x Mystical Tale colt - $600,000

Lot 182 was the first of our colt purchases, a son of JHB Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, secured from Davali Stud for $600,000. This is the second foal of a winning daughter of top-class broodmare sire Encosta de Lago, and from the further family of Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, so there is Golden Slipper winning blood on both the male and female sides of his pedigree.

Lot 206 - Capitalist x Otsanda colt - $180,000

Lot 206 - Capitalist x Otsanda colt - $180,000

Our second colt purchase was lot 206, another son of Capitalist, secured from Carramar Park Stud for $180,000. This colt is out of a Snitzel mare, which is already looking like a great nick for Capitalist, with stakes winner Profiteer and stakes placed Marine One bred on this cross. He is also from the family of JHB’s Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Pariah, reinforcing the juvenile precocity in this pedigree.

Lot 514 - Invader x Cariad colt - $360,000

Lot 514 - Invader x Cariad colt - $360,000

Our third colt was Lot 514, a son of 2YO Group 1 winner Invader out of Cariad, secured for $360,000 from Bell River Stud. Invader was a high-class 2YO, winner of the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and has been leaving some impressive sorts at the yearling sales. This colt is already a half-brother to three smart city winners, including the very fast Cardiff.

Lot 562 - Deep Field x De Sea Eagle colt - $240,000

Lot 562 - Deep Field x De Sea Eagle colt - $240,000

Our final colt purchase for the sale was Lot 562, a son of Deep Field out of De Sea Eagle, purchased from Cannon Hayes Stud for $240,000. The Deep Field/Flying Spur cross already seems to be working well, producing the very smart colt Aysar, who went very close to winning the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, and this strong colt also comes from a very speedy family.

Tee Cee Racing Filly

We also secured a filly for a very special project, to race in memory of great friend Tony Connelly (Tee Cee), who passed away late last year. His friends have come together to race a filly in his honour, along with Tony’s wife Monique and his sons Cooper and Will. We worked hard alongside Richard Haynes to identify this filly, who will hopefully be up and running early in Tony’s memory and provide a lovely opportunity for his friends to get together at the races.

Lot 288 - Pariah x Santarelli filly - $65,000

Lot 288 - Pariah x Santarelli filly - $65,000

This sharp filly was secured for $65,000 from the Middlebrook Valley Stud draft. She is by our very smart young stallion Pariah, who stands at Arrowfield Stud and out of a half-sister to Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Military Rose. This is an interesting pedigree as it is also the family of Pariah, making this filly inbred 5x4 to Summoned, the dam of Champion 3YO Zeditave.

Filly Partnership Purchases

We were also active alongside Michael and Richard Freedman in purchasing two fillies to join our Filly Partnership, in which there may be some ownership opportunity, get in touch through the button below.

Lot 154 - Capitalist x Miss Beauty World filly - $260,000

Lot 154 - Capitalist x Miss Beauty World filly - $260,000

Lot 154 was the first filly purchased, and she is a daughter of Capitalist out of Miss Beauty World, bought for $260,000 from Kitchwin Hills Stud.

She is a very strong and attractive filly by Capitalist, who is off to a great start with his 2YO’s, including impressive stakes winner Profiteer as well as stakes performers Forbes, Marine One, Gleneagles, Sneaky Shark and Mission Value. She is also a three-quarter sister to the very exciting filly Written Beauty, who has won 5 from 6 and looks poised for further Group race success this preparation, and beyond that this is a very strong page, littered with black type.

This filly is a half sister to two metropolitan performers, including Lady of Luxury, who looks like she will become a city winner sooner rather than later and may develop into a black type filly in time.

Lot 461 - Written Tycoon x Ariaz filly - $380,000

Lot 461 - Written Tycoon x Ariaz filly - $380,000

This filly is by Written Tycoon, out of the stakes performed Charge Forward mare Ariaz, and was secured for $380,000 from Woodside Park Stud.

Written Tycoon, who is currently sitting second on the general sires list, behind only Not a Single Doubt (sire of Everest winner Classique Legend). She is a very well-bodied, strong filly with an exceptional action. She is also out of a stakes placed Charge Forward mare, Ariaz, who was a very fast and precocious sort. Charge Forward is one of Australia's very best broodmare sires, notably with fillies - he is the broodmare sire of Golden Slipper winners She Will Reign and Estijaab, and also of the outstanding sprinter Sunlight.

JHB Magic Millions Wrap Up

After fourteen days outside of the Sydney area and over 5000kms on the roads inspecting the vast majority of the NSW-based yearlings in the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, it was rewarding to come away with seven quality offerings for our clients.

For our colt group we secured six, all by some of Australia’s leading and emerging stallions, alongside a beautiful Snitzel filly, with all details below.

Lot 349 - Capitalist x Golconda colt - $975,000

Lot 349 - Capitalist x Golconda colt - $975,000

Lot 349 was our first purchase, a very strong, forward-looking colt by our Golden Slipper winner Capitalist. This colt from Newgate Farm was secured for $975,000 and is the second foal of the stakes winning and Group 1 placed Snitzel mare Golconda. Her first foal, also by Capitalist, is Marine One, who was placed in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate on debut. This Capitalist x Snitzel cross is also intriguing as it has already produced the very smart 2YO winner Profiteer.

Lot 382 - Shalaa x Honesty Prevails colt - $1,150,000

He is the second foal out this very smart racemare, who won the Group 3 Widden Stakes and was also not beaten far in Capitalist’s Golden Slipper. Shalaa is off to a good start at stud, and it was pleasing to also see his son Shaquero take out the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on Saturday, even more so as he is bred on very similar lines to this colt. Shaquero is out of a mare by Not A Single Doubt, and this colt is out of a mare by Not A Single Doubt’s sire, Redoute’s Choice.

Lot 483 - Zoustar x Lone colt - $800,000

Lot 483 - Zoustar x Lone colt - $800,000

Lot 483, the Zoustar colt out of Lone, was secured for $800,000 from Widden Stud. He is the first foal out of his dam, who is a half-sister to stakes winners Gai’s Choice, Atmospherical and Peron. This is a family littered with black type, and this colt was a particularly good, strong example of a colt by his exciting sire.

Lot 658 - I Am Invincible x Precious Memories colt - $500,000

Lot 658 - I Am Invincible x Precious Memories colt - $500,000

Our fourth colt purchase was the very strong I Am Invincible x Precious Memories colt, who was secured for $500,000 from Yarraman Park Stud. He is the first foal of the very smart stakes-winning WA sprinter/miler Precious Memories, who is from a great family, that of Group 1 winning 2YO Castelvecchio.

Lot 772 - Snitzel x Sewreel colt - $800,000

He is the first foal of the smart New Zealand stakes winner Sewreel, who is by Champion NZ sire Savabeel. This is an interesting cross, with the very smart 2YO Not An Option also being by a son of Redoute’s Choice out of a Savabeel mare.

Lot 846 - Star Witness x Summer Sham colt - $250,000

Lot 846 - Star Witness x Summer Sham colt - $250,000

Our final colt purchase was lot 846, the Star Witness colt out of Summer Sham, secured from Widden Stud for $250,000. He is the first foal of the very smart Not A Single Doubt mare Summer Sham, who won each of her first three starts, including the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield. She is exceptionally well-bred, being from the immediate family of Champion sire Redoute’s Choice.

Lot 503 - Snitzel x Madame Andree filly - $800,000

She is a half sister to two stakes horses already, notably the very fast sprinter Anders, a multi-million dollar stallion prospect.

Two for JHB at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale

Lot 176 - Vancouver x Anatole

Lot 176 - Vancouver x Anatole

Returning to the sales from which we secured subsequent multiple stakes winning sprinter and stallion at Twin Hills Stud, Odyssey Moon, we were in action at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale this year, securing two impressive colts.

Our first purchase was the Nicconi x Lil Red Corvette colt, who was bought for Goulburn trainer Danny Williams to hopefully help out a little after the tragic loss of his potential star Hot ‘n’ Hazy. This colt came from the Blake Ryan Racing draft and breezed in great style over the Warwick Farm track. There was of course no commission to JHB for this purchase, and thanks go out to all who got behind the project in either buying a share or helping out with promotion.

Our second purchase was the Vancouver x Anatole colt, who was purchased for our existing colt partnership. The colt boasted one of the fastest breezes of the entire catalogue, and more importantly did it in great style, well within himself. Also seemingly blessed with an unflappable temperament, he looks a lovely horse to be targeting the later-season 2YO races with. He will go into training with Chris Waller.

King wins more Group 1 spoils and secures place at Coolmore Stud

King’s Legacy wins the Group 1 ATC Champagne Stakes

King’s Legacy wins the Group 1 ATC Champagne Stakes

After a pulsating victory in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes two weeks previously, King’s Legacy lined up to contest the Group 1 Champagne Stakes this weekend in a bid to join some true greats of the turf in becoming a dual Group 1 winner as a 2YO. On the day he did not disappoint, making many lengths despite a slack mid-race pace, and powering home to catch leader Glenfiddich.

In doing so King’s Legacy became the first horse by multiple Champion stallion Redoute’s Choice to win more than one Group 1 as a 2YO, and truely mark himself as a stallion prospect of the highest order. Notwithstanding him being a dual Group 1 winning juvenile, and by a Champion Sire, King’s Legacy comes from a family already littered with top-class sires. He is a three-quarter brother to Not A Single Doubt and from the family of Snippets.

So much was his appeal, that Coolmore made a move to secure the colt prior to the Champagne Stakes, and that is where he will stand upon his retirement. Coolmore Australia boss Tom Magnier said, “We are very excited to secure King’s Legacy for Coolmore. I see him as the best stallion prospect ever produced by champion stallion Redoute’s Choice and we just had to have him. He is an incredible physical specimen, as befits a $1.4 Million yearling and boasts a wonderful, world-class pedigree. Importantly, his racetrack performance completes the package, being a dual 2YO Group 1 winner with only upside to come. He comes from one of the best families in Australia, featuring high level stallions in Not A Single Doubt and Snippets plus a host of other top horses.”

Nitrous too good again at Randwick

Deep Field colt Nitrous had outclassed his rivals at Canberra previously and took a step up in grade in his stride when running out a ready winner at Randwick upon his return to Saturday grade.

Rated perfectly by Tommy Berry in a small field, the striking chestnut made his move early in the straight and kept on to beat a small, but select field in cosy fashion, setting up a tilt at the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast in January.

He is the first foal out of Group performed juvenile Flamboyant Lass, and was a $450,000 JHB yearling purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2018.

Thanks to trainers Peter and Paul Snowden and congratulations to winning owners, Belinda Bateman, Love Racing, Phil & Glenda Mehrten, Fergus & Delia Doyle, Steve & Louise Gillard, Gary Diamond, Danny & Pauline Saab and John & Fran Ingham.
