Seven for JHB at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

The Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale continues its inexorable rise, with the entire fortnight becoming an incredible fusion of top-class racing, yearling sales and more recently showjumping and polo.

Our week began with a great performance from the James Harron Bloodstock team in the new $1.45 million showjumping event to gain a very gallant third place finish. A big thanks and congratulations to our team members Peter McMahon, Amber Fuller, David Cameron and Emily Patterson who all gave it their very best!

On to the yearling sales, and in a typically buoyant and exciting market, we were delighted to come away with seven quality yearlings for our clients.

The details of our purchases are below, with the first five all secured on behalf of the James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership. Thanks as always to our owners for their support, and many thanks to Barry Bowditch, Gerry & Katie Page Harvey’s Magic Millions team who have once again put together an outstanding fortnight of all things equestrian on the Gold Coast.

Lot 279 - Zoustar x Ravenous Lass - $850,000

Lot 279, secured from Lime Country Thoroughbreds for $850,000 is a quality colt, with a great action and substance. He is a full-brother to Group 3 winner Zoushine, and out of a tough, Melbourne metropolitan winning mare Ravenous Lass.

He is inbred to Redoute’s Choice, which has been a very successful pattern with Zoustar, producing 16% black type horses to runners.

Lot 390 - Capitalist x Single Sapphire - $400,000

Lot 390, secured from Newgate Farm for $400,000 is a strong, powerful colt with great quality and a lovely, sprinter-style action, out of a Not a Single Doubt mare and from the family of top-class 2YO Twilight Royale. Capitalist continues to do a tremendous job as a source of high-class 2YOs, especially now that the tracks have dried up through Australia.

Lot 504 was secured from Emirates Park Stud for $1,600,000. This is a powerful, imposing colt - an incredible physical type by Champion sire I Am Invincible.

He is out of an unraced daughter of Golden Slipper winner Mossfun, who is now the dam of recent Sydney Group 3 winner Dajraan (by Frankel). The cross of I Am Invincible over a Fastnet Rock mare has also been very successful, with 27% black type horses to runners.

Lot 789 - Snitzel x Diana’s Star - $900,000

Lot 789, secured from one of Australia’s best producing farms in Segenhoe Stud for $900,000 is a very imposing and powerful colt by Champion sire Snitzel, and out of a half- sister to Horse of The Year Dissident. He’s got a lovely action, incredible girth and a big, strong hip.

Lot 967 - Zoustar x In Times of War - $1,000,000

Lot 967, secured from Baramul Stud for $1,000,000, is a strong, powerful son of Zoustar. He has great girth, a lot of quality and a good, strong hind leg. His dam In Times of War was a smart filly, who won at Saturday level in Sydney, while she is out of Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Military Rose.

Lot 259 - Trapeze Artist x Princess Wildfire - $360,000

Lot 259 was secured from Widden Stud for $360,000 for our Filly Partnership in conjunction with Michael Freedman. Lot 918 - Written Tycoon x Gypsy Flyer - $260,000

Lot 918 was secured for $260,000 from Newgate Farm for Jean-Dominique Huynh. She is a daughter of Champion Sire Written Tycoon and out of a dual-winning full sister to the top-class sprinter Invincible Star. An outstanding physical, she was great buying in a very strong market.

Duchess too speedy at Randwick

Duchess (More Than Ready x Tenant’s Tiara), pictured as a yearling

More Than Ready filly Duchess has proved to be a revelation this preparation for the JHB Filly Partnership. She recorded consecutive dominant front-running wins on heavy ground at Gosford and showed that drier tracks also hold no terrors for her when a brilliant on-speed winner over 1100m at Kensington today.

Eager to do even more sitting just outside the leader at a fast pace, ride James McDonald allowed Duchess to stride forward and lead comfortably on the turn before keeping up the gallop in great style in the straight to hold her rivals at bay.

Duchess is now the winner of four of her 12 starts, and this was her first important metropolitan victory. She is out of the very fast stakes winner Tenant’s Tiara, making her a half-sister to 2YO stakes winner Zoutenant. Duchess was secured by James Harron Bloodstock for our Filly Partnership alongside the Freedman Brothers at the 2019 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for $210,000 from the draft of Newgate Farm.

Congratulations to owners Rob Love, Mark Wizel and his More Than A Sprint partnership, Wilf & Rosemary Mula, Mike Symons, Kevin & Lesley Maloney, Alan Harvey, Newgate Farm, SF Bloodstock and Matthew Sandblom.

Five quality yearlings for JHB at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale

After what has been a very competitive and healthy yearling sales season, it was no surprise to see the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale post strong gains both on last year’s pandemic-affected selling but also on what was a very strong sale in 2019.

We were delighted to come away with five exceptional yearlings, with their details below.

Lot 36 - Pariah x Real Stolle colt - $375,000

Lot 36 - Pariah x Real Stolle colt - $375,000

The Pariah stock have been very impressive all year and this was an outstanding example. He is a three-quarter brother to 2YO stakes winner Nomothaj (by Snitzel), and out of 2YO stakes winner Real Stolle, so this is very much a 2YO orientated pedigree.

Lot 53 - Fastnet Rock x Rostova filly - $1,100,000

Lot 53 - Fastnet Rock x Rostova filly - $1,100,000

Our second purchase was a very athletic filly by top-class stallion Fastnet Rock, secured for $1,100,000 from Coolmore Stud. She is out of Group 1 winner Rostova and is a full-sister to the very smart sprinter Anaheed.

Our third purchase was this exceptionally powerful and precocious looking daughter of leading stallion I Am Invincible secured for $610,000 from Cressfield Stud. She is the second foal of the very fast and classy G2 winning sprinter Wild Rain and from the family of Horse of The Year Northerly.

Lot 173 - I Am Invincible x Zamzam colt - $1,150,000

Lot 428 - Capitalist x Miss Interiors - $1,050,000

Lot 428 - Capitalist x Miss Interiors - $1,050,000

Our final purchase was this very impressive and strong colt by Capitalist, secured from Torryburn Stud for $1,050,000. He is by our young stallion Capitalist who is going from strength to strength as a stallion at Newgate Farm, with already ten stakes horses from his first crop. This colt also boasts an outstanding dam side to his pedigree, with his dam having already produced G1 Caulfield Guineas runner-up Aysar and this season’s G2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner Home Affairs from her first two foals. Further this is the exceptional family of dual G1 winning sprinter Russian Revolution.

Hibiscus blooms at Hawkesbury

Our inaugural filly partnership now boasts a perfect five winners from five fillies as Pierro filly Hibiscus bounded away to break her maiden at Hawkesbury on Saturday. Hibiscus was a $100,000 JHB purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Alexia Fraser Bloodstock.

Perfectly rated by jockey Grant Buckley, Hibiscus sat just off the speed and finished off most strongly once into the clear in the straight for an impressive victory. With more to come once she gets out in distance, this should not be the first time Hibiscus is in the winners’ circle.

She joins Celestine, Bribery (both stakes placed), Duchess and Harmonium as winners from the first crop of our Filly Partnership.

Glistening shines in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes

Glistening-20210307-1620.jpg

After a very promising debut at Canberra, Zoustar filly Glistening proved herself worthy of a spot in the Group 1 Golden Slipper when running out a very speedy winner of the time-honoured Group 2 Reisling Stakes at Royal Randwick.

Quickly sent to the lead under Michael and Richard Freedman’s apprentice Jean Van Overmeire, she should a great turn of foot in the straight to power clear of her rivals and held off the fast-finishing Swift Witness to win in thrilling fashion.

This was a perfect start for the second year of the JHB Filly Partnership, with a Group 2 victory dramatically increasingly the value of this most exciting filly. This crop of the partnership was bought alongside Michael and Richard Freedman, who have done an excellent job in nurturing this young racehorse through to an important win, and credit also to Jean Van Overmeire, who gave her the perfect ride on a big day.

Huge congratulations go to owners, Paul & Allison Fleming, Tom Kennedy, Gary Diamond, Saskia Williams, Wilf & Rosemary Mula, Peter Fekete, Alan Harvey, Michael Vukadinovic, Kevin & Lesley Maloney, Mike Symons & Anna Grace and Mark & Theresa Wizel.

Homebred fillies have a day out at Canberra

Part of our portfolio management services is to oversee the careers of any retained homebreds, and it was super to see the results of this come to fruition at Canberra today at Pretty Woman and Molly Nails both saluted for their breeders.

Molly Nails was first to race, in the Canberra Guineas Preview, and after looming to challenge in good style, fought on bravely to deny the smart runner-up Yaletown. Molly Nails is now a dual winner from just three starts for Canberra trainer Matt Dale, who has handled her superbly.

She is the first foal of JHB broodmare purchase Maritimo, who was purchased carrying this filly for $575,000 at the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale in 2017 for Fergus Doyle. Maritimo has since had a Snitzel colt sell to Coolmore for $475,000. She has a lovely Fastnet Rock filly weanling and is in foal to Pariah at Willow Park Stud, where she resides and who did a great job raising Molly Nails.

Pretty Woman took her place later on the card and was a powerful winner of the Black Opal Preview, showing great speed to lead throughout and forging clear in the straight. Her time of 56.50 was a class record and the second fastest ever 1000m run at Canberra, which is astonishing for a 2YO. She is the second foal of JHB broodmare purchase Undoubted Pleasure, who was bought for $100,000 at the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale in 2016 for Donna & Rob Love.

Undoubted Pleasure has previously had 2YO winner Johnny Boss, who was sold for $310,000 off a $20,000 Deep Field service. She also has a Capitalist yearling filly in training with Matt Dale and is in foal to Triple Crown winner Pierro at Newgate Farm, where she resides. Like Molly Nails, Pretty Woman has been expertly handled by her trainer Matt Dale at Canberra, and looks a most exciting prospect.

Both fillies are now likely to head into stakes grade, and any black type would further enhance these broodmare purchases and cement both portfolios going forward.

A good haul for JHB at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale

The record of graduates from the Inglis Classic Yearling sale in recent seasons has not gone unnoticed, with the hugely impressive Inglis Millennium winner Profiteer (by Capitalist) joining the likes of Extreme Choice, Classique Legend and Vow and Declare as major race winners to come from this sale.

With this in mind, we approached this year’s sale with a strong focus on securing what we believed to be the best physical types on offer, and were delighted to come away with seven quality yearlings.

Colt Group Purchases

For the JHB Colt Group, we came away with four impressive colts, with their details below

Lot 182 - Capitalist x Mystical Tale colt - $600,000

Lot 182 - Capitalist x Mystical Tale colt - $600,000

Lot 182 was the first of our colt purchases, a son of JHB Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, secured from Davali Stud for $600,000. This is the second foal of a winning daughter of top-class broodmare sire Encosta de Lago, and from the further family of Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, so there is Golden Slipper winning blood on both the male and female sides of his pedigree.

Lot 206 - Capitalist x Otsanda colt - $180,000

Lot 206 - Capitalist x Otsanda colt - $180,000

Our second colt purchase was lot 206, another son of Capitalist, secured from Carramar Park Stud for $180,000. This colt is out of a Snitzel mare, which is already looking like a great nick for Capitalist, with stakes winner Profiteer and stakes placed Marine One bred on this cross. He is also from the family of JHB’s Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Pariah, reinforcing the juvenile precocity in this pedigree.

Lot 514 - Invader x Cariad colt - $360,000

Lot 514 - Invader x Cariad colt - $360,000

Our third colt was Lot 514, a son of 2YO Group 1 winner Invader out of Cariad, secured for $360,000 from Bell River Stud. Invader was a high-class 2YO, winner of the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and has been leaving some impressive sorts at the yearling sales. This colt is already a half-brother to three smart city winners, including the very fast Cardiff.

Lot 562 - Deep Field x De Sea Eagle colt - $240,000

Lot 562 - Deep Field x De Sea Eagle colt - $240,000

Our final colt purchase for the sale was Lot 562, a son of Deep Field out of De Sea Eagle, purchased from Cannon Hayes Stud for $240,000. The Deep Field/Flying Spur cross already seems to be working well, producing the very smart colt Aysar, who went very close to winning the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, and this strong colt also comes from a very speedy family.

Tee Cee Racing Filly

We also secured a filly for a very special project, to race in memory of great friend Tony Connelly (Tee Cee), who passed away late last year. His friends have come together to race a filly in his honour, along with Tony’s wife Monique and his sons Cooper and Will. We worked hard alongside Richard Haynes to identify this filly, who will hopefully be up and running early in Tony’s memory and provide a lovely opportunity for his friends to get together at the races.

Lot 288 - Pariah x Santarelli filly - $65,000

Lot 288 - Pariah x Santarelli filly - $65,000

This sharp filly was secured for $65,000 from the Middlebrook Valley Stud draft. She is by our very smart young stallion Pariah, who stands at Arrowfield Stud and out of a half-sister to Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Military Rose. This is an interesting pedigree as it is also the family of Pariah, making this filly inbred 5x4 to Summoned, the dam of Champion 3YO Zeditave.

Filly Partnership Purchases

We were also active alongside Michael and Richard Freedman in purchasing two fillies to join our Filly Partnership, in which there may be some ownership opportunity, get in touch through the button below.

Lot 154 - Capitalist x Miss Beauty World filly - $260,000

Lot 154 - Capitalist x Miss Beauty World filly - $260,000

Lot 154 was the first filly purchased, and she is a daughter of Capitalist out of Miss Beauty World, bought for $260,000 from Kitchwin Hills Stud.

She is a very strong and attractive filly by Capitalist, who is off to a great start with his 2YO’s, including impressive stakes winner Profiteer as well as stakes performers Forbes, Marine One, Gleneagles, Sneaky Shark and Mission Value. She is also a three-quarter sister to the very exciting filly Written Beauty, who has won 5 from 6 and looks poised for further Group race success this preparation, and beyond that this is a very strong page, littered with black type.

This filly is a half sister to two metropolitan performers, including Lady of Luxury, who looks like she will become a city winner sooner rather than later and may develop into a black type filly in time.

Lot 461 - Written Tycoon x Ariaz filly - $380,000

Lot 461 - Written Tycoon x Ariaz filly - $380,000

This filly is by Written Tycoon, out of the stakes performed Charge Forward mare Ariaz, and was secured for $380,000 from Woodside Park Stud.

Written Tycoon, who is currently sitting second on the general sires list, behind only Not a Single Doubt (sire of Everest winner Classique Legend). She is a very well-bodied, strong filly with an exceptional action. She is also out of a stakes placed Charge Forward mare, Ariaz, who was a very fast and precocious sort. Charge Forward is one of Australia's very best broodmare sires, notably with fillies - he is the broodmare sire of Golden Slipper winners She Will Reign and Estijaab, and also of the outstanding sprinter Sunlight.

Celestine brings up a quick double.

Celestine wins again at Morphettville

Celestine wins again at Morphettville

Four of the five fillies in our 2019 filly partnership have won on debut, and, after a winning debut at Murray Bridge on 22nd July, Celestine took this to the next step at Morphettville on 15th August.

She again showed great speed to be up with the pace, and despite again running a bit green under pressure with Barend Vorster aboard, she powered away from her rivals to win in great style.

She next heads to the Flemington straight on 23rd September, which hopefully serves as a good grounding for her to tackle the black type races back there in November at the Melbourne Cup carnival. Big thanks go to her trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy, who have been very patient in nurturing this Nicconi filly to produce her best.

Congratulations to her owners Rob Love, Gary Diamond, Wilf & Rosemary Mula, Kevin & Lesley Maloney, Mike Symons & Anna Grace, Mark & Jia Wizel, Josh Rutman, Kevin Tong, Nathan Mufale, Rorey James, Justin Dowers and Trent Weir.

Caribbean Rose breaks through at Rotorua

Caribbean Rose winning at Rotorua

Caribbean Rose winning at Rotorua

Lightly-raced mare Caribbean Rose always looked the type to improve with age, being a New Zealand bred daughter of Tavistock and from the family of several older stars, and so it proved when she ran out a ready winner this week at Rotorua.

Trained by the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman team, she was caught in a tricky spot towards the outside on this tight track, but proved much too good for her opposition, powering away in the straight.

Caribbean Rose was purchased from the Cambridge Stud draft as a yearling in the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, and is a half-sister to multiple stakes placed Stravinsky mare Crystal Fountain, and out of a half-sister to VRC Oaks winner Serenade Rose and the dam of Group 1 winning sprinter Trekking. This is also the family of Champion older horse Voila Ici and Hong Kong Horse of the Year and multiple Champion Viva Pataca.

Congratulations to winning owners Love Racing, in whose familiar red and white heart silks she races in.
